"It's brilliant. Everyone is so nice and the productions are amazing. I made loads of friends. It really boost your confidence! And I love it." Rebecca McCluskey
Harrogate Youth Theatre (HYT) is a great opportunity to make friends, build confidence, work with theatre professionals and above all have brilliant fun. In the past year:
Our 3 – 5s shared a story with Fidget Theatre, our under 8s became animals with Northern Ballet, our 9 – 11s made a mystery show about a circus, our 12 – 14s terrified us with devised performances based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe, our 15+ inspired us with a production about the science of their brains and went ‘live’ with On Air by Richard Conlon, we transformed the Main Auditorium into the Museum of Abandoned Dreams with State of Play theatre and 8 people achieved an Arts Award. What’s going to happen this year?
HYT run weekly drama workshops for 3 to 18-year-olds. HYT offer everybody the same opportunities and experiences whatever your background. Members of HYT enjoy:
- The opportunity to apply for a wide variety of HYT activities, including weekly workshops, holiday projects, large scale productions and theatre visits
- To learn from and work with theatre professionals, Harrogate Theatre associate companies and other visiting artists
- Reduced price theatre tickets
- End of term performances in the Harrogate Studio Theatre or at another exciting venue
Terms are a mix of workshops and performance. Workshop terms allow members to try out different theatre techniques, exploring creativity and developing skills. Members cover a variety of topics from improvisation to text-work, from voice to movement, demonstrating their newfound skills at the end of term in an informal sharing.
Each group is given at least one formal performance opportunity a year either in the theatre's Studio space, or in another venue. This invaluable opportunity allows members to create theatre by young people for young people, and values them as artists in their own right.
Some members have gone on to study at drama schools including RADA and the Central School of Speech and Drama, but HYT's priority is to ensure that every member makes friends, learns new skills and, above all, has fun.
From age 12 our members are able to audition to take part in the HYT summer show. This project alternates annually between a week-long devised project in a non-traditional theatre space and a three-week scripted project performed in Harrogate Theatre's main house. Both projects are designed to challenge those seriously interested in pursuing acting as a career and offer the opportunity to work with outside theatre professionals, widen members' experience and creating future links with the theatre industry.
All workshops are run by Disclosure and Barring Service checked theatre professionals.
£60 per term (£35 concessionary rate for families on family tax credits, job seekers allowance etc.) Places are limited and are allocated on a first come-first served basis.
There are 10 workshops per term and the dates fall within the school term. If you're aged 3 to 18, and have an interest in working with theatre professionals, improving your skills or just making some new friends, why not join HYT today?
