'Funny How' by Thomas James Butler

Harrogate Theatre and RedHouse Originals Gallery are excited to present an exhibition by Thomas James Butler to coincide with the launch of the 8th annual Harrogate Comedy Festival. “Funny How?” features surreal portraits of legendary faces from the world of comedy including Laurel & Hardy, Spike Milligan and Victoria Wood.

Following the success of Noel Fielding’s exhibition at Harrogate Theatre in 2015, York-based artist Butler has created eleven original collages in his trademark style for this special event, which will open officially on Saturday 8th October as part of the festival’s ‘Big Weekend’.

Butler: "Ever since watching Vic Reeves Big Night Out, comedy has been as big an influence on my life as art and music and it's an honour to be involved in this exhibition. Choosing the subjects was the hardest part, but I have tried to go with the artists that have affected my life. Whether it be listening to Hancock's Half Hour in my dad's car or staying up late to watch Vic and Bob, these people have given me the sense of humour I have today. As Charlie Chaplin said 'a day without laughter is a day wasted' and I have all these subjects to thank for those days not wasted."

“Funny How?” is presented in association with Arts Emergency, who create unique opportunities for young people that are least able to access the arts, humanities and creative industries, through their mentoring programme, inspirational speakers and by offering industry contacts and networking opportunities to those who have none.

The artworks are all for sale, with £25 from every sale being donated to Arts Emergency.

The exhibition will go on display at Harrogate Theatre’s Circle Bar from 8th - 16th October 2016. You can 'meet the artist' on Saturday 8th at Circle Live.
