Rossini - Petite Messe Solennelle
BOOKING OPENS 17TH SEPTEMBER
PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE GIOACHINO ROSSINI (1792–1868) Only Rossini could have written this work! It has been noted that the work is neither petite, is far from solennelle and is hardly a Mass at all. It is a riotous piece, with its glorious mixture of opera buffa and 'churchy' counterpoint, executed with such panache that it would be foolhardy to attempt to perform it liturgically.
Rossini enjoyed great prestige, wealth, popular acclaim and artistic influence. He was recognised as the greatest Italian composer of his time. In 1855, at the age of 63, he settled in Paris where he wrote over 150 piano pieces, songs, and small ensembles, including the graceful and economical Petite Messe Solennelle (1863).
Many of these later pieces were only performed at his salon, for private audiences, which included most of the great artistic and public figures in Paris at the time. Rossini refused to have them published. In his annotations to the autograph of the Petite Messe Solennelle he self-deprecatingly described the work as 'the last mortal sin of my old age'. Initially, the instrumental scoring of the Mass for piano and harmonium seems strange, but, given its context as a salon piece, such instrumentation is not unusual.
Harrogate Choral Society are delighted to be accompanied by our own Beryl Pankhurst on Piano and Thomas Moore, Director of Music at Wakefield Cathedral, on Harmonium. Soloists will be Samantha Hay, Soprano; Gaynor Keeble, Contralto; Bonaventura Bottone, Tenor; and John Cunningham, Bass.
Ticket prices are from £17 to £24 with concessions for over 60s, unwaged and students, half price for under 16s and free for under 6s when accompanied by a paying adult.
