CLASSICfest

ClassicFest, created by the organisers of Buxton’s popular International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, will include opera, oratoria, operetta, musical theatre and pop.


QUAKER GIRL

This delightful Edwardian comedy is about Prudence, a Quaker Girl who escapes from the dullness of her life in an English village to sample the high life of Paris.  Performed by students of Liverpool Theatre School and College this will certainly be an original and lively production.  So, “Come to the Ball” and enjoy a wonderful evening’s entertainment.

AN AFTERNOON OF FLANDERS & SWANN

CHESS

Two of the world’s greatest chess masters battle it out at the world chess championships but their greatest contest is for the love of one woman. Written by Tim Rice and ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson,  CHESS has one of the greatest musical scores of all time including  “I Know Him So Well.

Fusion Theatre was founded in 2000 as part of an effort to build bridges between young people from different political and religious backgrounds in the Lisburn area and has emerged as Northern Ireland’s premier youth theatre group winning numerous awards.  In 2010 the group won a well-deserved place in the televised live heats of the Channel 5 show “Don’t Stop Believing”.

THE MERRY WIDOW

Often called 'The Queen of Operettas', The Merry Widow has certainly enjoyed extraordinary success since its 1905 premier in Vienna.  Parisian high society is aflutter when the young, beautiful and stupendously wealthy widow Hanna Glawari arrives looking for a man who will love her and not her fortune. The dashing Count Danilo seems the perfect match, but no-one knows that he’s broken her heart before. Can she forgive and forget, or will a new admirer win her love?   The melodies and songs – “Vilja", "The Merry Widow Waltz", "You'll Find Me At Maxim's" to name but a few - are sung the whole world over. 

Trent Opera has won many awards including the International Trophy at the G&S Festival in Buxton and first prize at the Waterford Festival in Ireland.

MEET THE MOUSETRAP MAN

David Turner is Europe’s most experienced adjudicator of musical theatre, but that is just his hobby.  His actual day job for many years has been general manager and artistic director of Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” – the world’s longest running play at London St Martin’s Theatre.  Come and join him at the Majestic Hotel  to listen to his entertaining, humorous and informative talk on “The Wicked Side of Life in Theatre”.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

Set in a weekend country house in turn of the century Sweden, Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music brings together surprising liaisons, long simmering passions and a taste of love’s endless possibilities. Hailed as witty and wildly romantic, the story centres on the elegant actress Desirée Armfeldt and the spider’s web of sensuality, intrigue and desire that surrounds her.   Featuring the popular song “Send in the Clowns” this will be a sparkling performance by Trent Opera who won first prize with this production at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera .

HMS PINAFORE

All aboard as a brand new production of HMS Pinaforesets sail.  This is one of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operas, just brimming with infectious, toe-tapping tunes.  A nautical tale of romance and mistaken identities, it features some of Gilbert’s wittiest characters and with its lampooning of the British class system pokes good-natured fun at party politics and the rise to authority of people who are just not qualified for the job!  With memorable classics such as We Sail the Ocean Blue, I’m Called Little Buttercup and I am the Monarch of the Sea you can be sure of a night filled with Gilbert & Sullivan’s hilarious capers.

JUBILEE CHORAL SPECTACULAR

DIE FLEDERMAUS

All of Viennese high society is going to Prince Orlofsky’s Ball. They just don’t want each other to know this. Eisenstein should be going to prison so he’s keeping a low profile. For obvious reasons his wife and her lover Alfred are also keen to conceal their identities. Their maid Adele should be tending to her sick aunt, not partying. Eisenstein’s best friend Falke however is plotting revenge on him for making him walk through the city dressed as a bat. By the end of the night all masks will be lifted, identities will be known and truths will be revealed.  

Die Fledermaus is Johann Strauss’ most brilliant and best-known stage work  -  a glittering comedy packed with Viennese music that has become a firm favourite in opera houses all over the world . 

This is the first “CLASSICfest” Festival Production.  The show was cast in May from performers who auditioned from around the country.  Everyone will get together the week before the show to rehearse with award winning International Director, Alisatir Donkin and it promises to be a stupendous evening.

THE MIKADO

The Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company

The Mikado is the most frequently performed and most popular of all the G&S operas.  Set in the town of Titipu, this hilarious production pokes delicious fun at politics and politicians and its bountiful score and witty lyrics never fail to amuse.  Including all-time favourites such as Tit Willow, Three Little Maids, I’ve Got a List, A Wand’ring Minstrel I, Let the Punishment Fit the Crime and The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring, The Mikado is simply a joy.
