The first ever "Gang Show” was performed in 1932, created by Ralph Reader, C.B.E.
Ralph’s tale began on the day he met the Holborn Rovers. It was for these boys that he wrote all the sketches and songs for a single concert. It was the first time he had ever attempted such a thing.
After that show, Admiral Philpotts, who was then the County Commissioner for London, stopped him outside the lift at Scout Headquarters and told him how much he'd enjoyed the Holborn Rovers show. Then he said, "Reader, we've a wonderful camp-site at Downe, and we're very anxious to build a swimming-pool there. Can you help us raise the money?" Ralph said, “Yes” and the first large scale “Gang Show” was born.
Harrogate Gang Show started back in 1957 and was performed at the Royal Hall. After a break of about 40 years Harrogate and district Scouts and Guides came together in 2007 to start the traditional again. It is great to still be performing in the venue where it all started. We are bigger than ever with over 60 young people in this year’s show performing a mixture of popular songs, dances and comedy sketches for your entertainment.
Harrogate and district Scouts and Guides invite you to come along.
