THE EPIC STRAIN IN ENGLISH POETRY

In this10 week course we will look at the continuing influence of the epic tradition on English poets from Chaucer to the present day. We shall read extracts from Chaucer, Spenser, Milton, Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Whitman, Eliot and Walcott to show how poets have striven to emulate the classical tradition exemplified by The Iliad, the Odyssey and The Aenid terms of both style and subject matter. There will be the opportunity for course members to introduce poems of their own choice dealing with the recurrent themes of heroism, adventure, love and friendship, rebellion, adventure, travel and quest.
