2016: A Singer and Playwright Odyssey
Why not try something new in 2016? For young people we've got singing workshops for 7 - 18 years and play-writing workshops for 12 - 18 years, both part of the programme Harrogate Theatre offers at Hive, our dedicated education space.
Harrogate Youth Singing is a great group to join to develop your singing skills within a supportive environment. We sing a mix of pop and musical theatre numbers, thinking about how to perform them as well as learning breathing and singing techniques. Some of our members recently took on a special challenge of performing in one of English Touring Opera’s performances at Harrogate Theatre.
Harrogate Youth Playwrights will explore different techniques and exercises for writing plays. We’ll ask questions such as what gives us inspiration, how can you structure a play, how do you create characters? It doesn’t matter if you’re a budding author, or have never thought about writing before, these workshops will be fun, energetic and full of fresh ideas.
Harrogate Youth Playwrights will be led by Henry Raby, a writer, poet, play-wright and theatre-maker. As a poet, he has performed at festivals and toured the country performing anarchic and honest spoken word about growing up, politics and friendship. For Harrogate Youth Theatre, he has written Who Shot The Sheriff, Hang On Just A Minute and an adaption of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As a play-wright he has written work for York Theatre Royal, Darlington Civic Theatre and Hull Truck’s Youth Theatre.
We have places available for both of these groups this term. Harrogate Youth Singing starts on Thursday 7 January for 10 weeks and costs £50 (£30 concessions). Harrogate Youth Playwrights starts on Monday 11 January for five weeks and costs £25 (£15 concessions).
