Thunder Road are back with 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

Since 2011 Harrogate Theatre has developed an informal associate artist or partnership scheme that allows us to support and champion a diverse and varied range of new work by emerging and existing artists and companies.

There are no strict criteria for who we work with but our priority is to ensure that we work with the most varied selection of companies as our resources allow and those hailing from the North of England, and Harrogate and District in particular.

Northern based theatre company, Thunder Road, are a Harrogate Theatre Associate Company and we are thrilled that next month they return to Harrogate Theatre with an exciting new nautical co-production – 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

You may remember their successful sell-out run of The Invisible Man in 2017? Following on from this the company will continue their theme of reinventing classic novels with a contemporary edge and a vibrant yet intimate feel. For Artistic Director Alex Moran, it’s all part of their development as artists and as a company: “We thought let’s do it and let’s really challenge ourselves. We are doing just that, and we’re splashing about as much as we can to make this one really special”.

For this latest production, adapted by acclaimed playwright Rob Johnston, the world quakes in fear ... a sea-monster is sinking warships in the mid-Atlantic. Their vessel capsized, Professor Aronnax (the most famous oceanographer in Europe) and Ned Land (King of Harpooners) find themselves adrift and lost on a storm-swept ocean. Rescued by the mysterious Captain Nemo and held captive aboard his fantastic ship the Nautilus, their perilous voyage begins...

Jules Verne’s prophetic novel of sub-sea adventure foreshadows our own atomic-age as the unrivalled technology of the Nautilus is put to ever-more destructive use by the dark genius of Captain Nemo. His quest? To rid the world of all mankind. Caught in a race against time Aronnax and Land must destroy the Nautilus before Nemo’s appalling vision comes true.

The talented cast includes Alex Moran (Ned Land), Christopher Ward (Professor Aronax) and Martin Teall (Captain Nemo). What’s more, the creative team boasts impressive credentials: Multi award winning Moran recently played David in the National Theatre’s UK and Ireland tour of WarHorse and playwright Rob Johnston has previously won The Kings Cross Award for New Writing.

The show will also feature music from Bob Fox, the longest serving WarHorse Songman in National Theatre history.

This show is described as ‘a cautionary tale of science, exploration, madness and courage’ and as Harrogate Theatre’s fourth collaboration with Thunder Road we’d urge you to come and support this talented company in on their latest voyage.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is at Harrogate Theatre 10-19 May. www.harrogatethaetre.co.uk or 01423 502116.
