You’re invited to the party of a lifetime
The team at Harrogate Theatre have managed to book the UK’s longest running immersive theatre show to come to Harrogate next month – and it’s going to be spectacular!
This very special production of The Great Gatsby has been wowing London audiences and touring select venues across the UK since 2017. It delivers a unique experience that will challenge all your views on what theatre is and isn't!
As expected with this title, prepare to be plunged deep in to a world of 1920's jazz, cocktails and excess in an 'extraordinary' (The Stage) production of F Scott Fitzgerald's seminal tale of lust and liquor.
But… the audience dress up and move around the theatre, becoming part of the story as it unfolds around them. There's no seating. You're in amongst the action (no, you don't need to act!), following characters to various scenes around the building and becoming part of something really very special.
I don’t want to give too much away but prepare to be astounded as we transform Harrogate Theatre into Gatsby's mansion. We’ll be creating Gatsby’s Drugstore on stage, taking seats out of the main auditorium and creating a cabaret ballroom with fully working pop-up bar, and we’ll be creating fabulous sets in spaces around the building including the foyer, Circle bar, and dressing rooms. In short, we’ll be stepping you back to 1923 in such a way you feel like you're actually there.
The word ‘immersive’ can seem scary to some, but what does actually mean here?
‘Immersive’ means that the environment is designed to deliver an all-encompassing experience; from the moment you enter Gatsby’s Drugstore on arrival, you will feel like you have been transported to Long Island, back in the roaring 1920’s of Jazz-Age America, and are a guest at Mr Gatsby’s opulent party where the drama will unfold around you. You may have the opportunity to follow the other guests into smaller rooms and spaces, to learn the Charleston or be able to converse with Mr Gatsby himself. You need only interact as much as you are comfortable to – if you prefer to observe from the side-lines, nobody will mind. In fact, Mr Gatsby often enjoys doing exactly that himself!
So come join us at one of Jay Gatsby’s infamous parties this July. There'll be dancing and music as you live and breathe this wonderful story. 1920s dress is encouraged (but not compulsory), and dancing shoes are required.
You'll literally never see theatre in the same way again!
