Harrogate Theatre: Raising The Roof

Roof works and scaffolding around exterior of Harrogate Theatre

Work is currently underway to prepare to replace the 121-year-old original roof on the Harrogate Theatre building, as well as repairs to the windows and guttering. The theatre will re-open in November and until then we will be out and about in community venues embracing social distancing.

Works to heritage sites always present unique challenges and Harrogate Theatre is no exception. The first stage, now close to completion, has been to erect scaffolding around the theatre building and above the existing roof. The building footprint is sloped and wedge-shaped making the job quite tricky in places. The scaffolding roof also has to be 4m clear of the building’s highest point, the theatre’s cupola. The cupola is the small red turret at the top of the theatre with our original name on it, Harrogate Grand Opera House.

“The full Cardinal team are extremely excited to be involved in delivering the conservation works at Harrogate Theatre. It is always a great privilege to be involved in restoring and protecting historic buildings so that it can be enjoyed by future generations.”

Michael Brearey – Construction Director, Cardinal.

“It’s a privilege for us at Gleeds to be managing delivery of this important project at Harrogate Theatre. The roof replacement and repairs to the historic fabric of this Grade II listed structure have been sympathetically designed so the people of Harrogate have an iconic arts facility for many years to come.’’

Geoff Daniel – Director, Cost Management, Gleeds.

The next stage will be to take off the roof slates above the stage and insert eco-friendly sheep’s wool insulation, before laying new slates.

You can view stunning drone footage of the works from Colin Corker on his Facebook page ‘Droning On Harrogate’ and on Harrogate Theatre’s socials.
