LOpSoc, the University of Southampton Light Opera Society, proudly present their first ever production of Patience to the 25th Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. The student-run society has an un-auditioned chorus, which anyone can join regardless of experience. Our large numbers on stage result in a strong sound and high energy, and the chorus been nominated twice for Best Chorus at the festival. Two-time winners of Best Production and Best Musical Director, and three-time winners of the Best Director award, the society is proud of its inclusivity and the high standard set by the hard-working student and community members.
They are looking forward to presenting their unique take on Patience, which has updated the parody of the aesthetic movement, fad culture, and the superficiality, hypocrisy and pretentiousness of such movements to a bustling London street in the early 2000s. Aestheticism is replaced with hipster fashion to bring this comedic ‘coming of age’ story into the 21st Century, presenting a modern take on the otherwise unchanged score and libretto. A group of trendy young ladies in London, rapturously caught up in the hipster fashion, are in love with two promising rival poets. But the poets have no interest in the ladies, as they are both fighting for the love of Patience, a simple barista, who cares nothing for fashion and has never been in love all her life. Patience believes that true love must be completely unselfish - it must wither and sting and burn! Meanwhile, the boisterous players of 'The Dragoons', the local rugby team, are broken-hearted as the ladies have eyes only for the hipster poets. Even though they don't see the point to fashion, the team decides to give it a try in order to win the ladies' hearts. The updated setting rings true to all the themes of the original, and once again proves that Gilbert and Sullivan’s work is timeless.
