Written by Naomi Sumner Chan
SAME SAME DIFFERENT is an original and affecting new verbatim play about adoption, identity and belonging that gives adoptees from all over the world the chance to share their adoption story in their own words.
Inspired by Naomi's own experiences as a Trans- racial adoptee, adopted from Hong Kong into a White British family, the play focuses on what adoptees perceive as the similarities and differences between themselves and their family members.
By exploring what it's like to grow up in a household and community who might look very different to you, SAME SAME DIFFERENT asks: does nature or nurture most influence a person's identity?
'I think the initial premise the idea that an adoptee can feel alienated from their family or have differences of feeling was something that I had never really thought about before. It was really interesting to hear those perspectives, and also to know that they were verbatim, from interviews, that really was exciting and interesting.' Lucy Hammond Pilot Theatre
'Thought provoking and actually really eye-opening. It was interesting to hear verbatim, the perspectives of adoptees and is a reminder of the impact our decision making has on children.' Social Worker Caritas Care
'I was intrigued. I've never thought about the other side of the coin, in terms of how the child feels. I've not thought about adoption in that detail, or heard those accounts from adoptees.'
'SAME SAME DIFFERENT is such an interesting and thought provoking concept and performance. I genuinely learnt so much this piece of theatre is so so important!' Beth Sitek Flattered Women Collective
'Really highlighted how different adoptions can be and therefore the experiences are. It is interesting to hear adult adoptees voices.'
'It was informative for me, but I also think that for people who have been adopted, if they went to see it, that feeling of recognition I think would be really powerful.'
