'A sad tale's best for winter: I have one
Of sprites and goblins '
Shakesepare, The Winters Tale
The tradition of the yuletide ghost story probably goes back centuries. But it arguably reached its highpoint in Cambridge, around 1900, when Montague Rhodes James performed his uniquely chilling tales to friends in Kings College.
Now, over a century after their first publication, Nunkie Theatre Company have bought four of the eeriest and most entertaining of these masterpieces back to life in these gripping, critically acclaimed one-man shows.
A Warning to the Curious
A Warning to the Curious, in which a young archaeologist is haunted and hunted by the guardian of an ancient treasure, is perhaps James's most poignant and personal work. It is paired here with Lost Hearts, among the first stories the author wrote, which offers one of his most memorable villains, the predatory scholar Mr Abney.
