Harrogate Comedy Festival - What a Year!

The 9th Annual Harrogate Comedy Festival was totally awesome!

The Harrogate Theatre Team programmed 53 comedians across our 4 venues over 12 days. Jason Manford opened the festival with a warm up gig at Harrogate Theatre and the rest of the line-up was immense, with big fish like Greg Davies, Stewart Lee and Jimmy Carr leading the festival and epic sell out shows from household names Simon Amstell, Paul Chowdhry and the cricket legend Graeme Swann.

Even the new boys on the block had sell out shows - watch out for rising stars Ed Gamble, Phil Wang and local lad Tom Tailor. Rising star Maisie Adam, who trained at Harrogate Theatre’s Youth Theatre, came back to do a gig alongside fellow comedians Bec Hill and Sarah Kendall. She stuck around all week to review shows too and judge at the comedian of the year. She’s since been signed with the same agency as Tim Minchin and Rowan Atkinson. Congratulations Maisie!

The sixth Comedian of the Year Competition was a close call, with 14 comedians plugging for the win. In the end Liverpudlian-Romanian comic Radu Isac took home the trophy, back to Liverpool on the National Express.

Hyena Lounge Comedy Club Closing Gala finished off the festival with a big bang as surprise guest Chris Ramsey appeared on stage – just goes to show, you never know who’s going to be turning up to the Hyena Comedy Club (don’t miss our December gig!)

We couldn’t have done it without our wonderful festival partners:

Daleside for sponsorship and beer!

Fabulous media partners Stray FM and the Harrogate Advertiser for helping us get the word out.

Our friends at North Bar, Major Tom’s Social and The Little Ale House for giving the festival a town-wide buzz.

And the fantastic art from RedHouse Originals.

Thanks for a whopper of a year to all the 53 comedians who came to entertain us: and all you lovely lot who came to watch!

Next years’ comedy festival line-up is slowly being revealed, with first confirmed act Sarah Millican already nearly sold out - get them tickets while you can!

Here's Jason Byrne having a whale of a time!
