Chilling ghost stories on our Main Stage

If you’ve picked up our new What’s On guide you will have seen the striking image on it’s front cover. This February Adam Robinson returns to Harrogate Theatre with Upon the Stair his most exciting, ambitious and gripping production yet. But this time it’s different…

After multiple sell-out runs in the Studio Upon the Stair will run on our Main Stage for a week. This is all part of how we work with new and emerging theatre makers to support their projects and develop their careers in the industry. Through this scheme we have supported Adam’s previous ghostly tales with The Book Of Darkness & Light and we think Upon the Stair is perfect to be shown on a bigger stage to a much larger audience.

Upon the Stair uses traditional storytelling, live music and British Sign Language (BSL) to bring three chilling ghost stories to life. Through working with Deaf Consultants and linguists Adams script has been developed and translated into British Sign Language and Visual Vernacular, making Upon the Stair accessible for d/Deaf audiences without the need of an interpreter on stage. Performed by Deaf actor and dancer Raffie Julien this is a truly remarkable gothic performance like never witnessed before.

Adam recently said: “I’ve never been more excited or proud about anything we’ve done before. These are the scariest and most atmospheric stories we’ve ever put on stage. We’ve been surrounded by such a wonderful and talented team to bring the show to life and I can’t wait to share Upon the Stair with you all.”

Made up of three new tales of terror Upon the Stair has been directed by Fringe First Award winner Dick Bonham, who recently directed the sell-out A Christmas Carol in our Studio Theatre. The play also features a specially created live violin score composed and performed by Chloë Hayward.

Before it comes to Harrogate Upon the Stair has been performed at Square Chapel in Halifax and at the Salisbury Playhouse. The audiences have loved it with responses like "Never seen anything like” and "The fusion of music, movement, story and design was exquisite".

Upon the Stair is at Harrogate Theatre TUE 25 FEB – SAT 29 FEB and is a co-production between Harrogate Theatre, Square Chapel Arts Centre, Halifax, and producers LittleMighty.
